MP3 Audio Books - "One of the Perks of Modern Technology"

First of all let’s clarify the term "mp3 audio books".  What most people call mp3 audio books are not really mp3 audio books at all.  Most people using this term mean downloadable audio books.  Downloadable audio books can be downloaded to computers and then transferred and played on mp3 players like Apple® iPod®, SanDisk®, and hundreds more.

The "real" mp3 audio books are actually CDs made up of audio files that use the mp3 compression format instead of the regular CD audio format.  This is done because using the mp3 format allows more content to be placed on one CD thereby reducing production costs associated with large audio books.

The problem of what does it mean when someone talks about or does a search for "mp3 audio books" is really not too big of a problem though.  One can assume that when someone uses that term they are probably referring to the downloadable books that are becoming ever more popular.  We can assume this for two reasons.  One, most people just assume something with mp3 in it's title or description automatically means it's a downloadable file.  Two, most people who are talking about or searching for audio books on CD will search for  "cd audio books" or something similar such as the more appropriate term, "mp3-cd audio books".

This site is going to cover both types of audio books but it will mostly focus on downloadable audio books that can be downloaded and then transferred to a compatible mobile audio device such as the ones mentioned above.  You're also going to have access to side by side comparisons of the prices and features of several of the largest online suppliers of downloadable audio books that can be listened to on mp3 players.  You're probably wondering why we only do comparisons of a few companies when there are dozens of sites that come up when ever you do a search for any type of audio books.

Well, the truth is that when you do a search for "mp3 audio books" the large numbers of results that come up are not for companies that are actual suppliers of audio book downloads but instead are affiliate sites that are promoting the products of the few companies that are the actual suppliers.  You might wonder if finding and purchasing a product through an affiliate site is a mistake.  It's not a mistake as long as you know which company the affiliate site is promoting and you also know that that company is the one that offers you the products and services that you want.

The main thing to remember is that if you’re dealing with a legitimate supplier of downloadable audio books, the audio file will most likely be in a different format than mp3.  This is done to protect the copyrights of the publishers and the authors.  If you're buying or renting a book on CD then there's a very good chance that it will be in mp3 format.  But if you find someone selling actual downloadable mp3 audio books the best thing to do would be to move on to another site because I don't know of any company that's been granted rights to distribute downloadable books that are actual mp3 files.

Regardless of what file format the audio book you download is in, you’re still going to be able to enjoy the perks of being able to listen to your favorite classic book or one of The New York Times best sellers just about anywhere or anytime.  It's true that some companies' files are not compatible with as many audio devices as some other company's but the difference is not a large one.  Also, most audio book suppliers offer some means of searching for your audio player to find out if it's compatible with that company's file format.  One tip to remember is if your device has the "Play For Sure ©" or "Compatible with Windows Vista©" logo on it then your device should be compatible.

You see portability really is the primary reason ”mp3 audio books” have been growing in popularity at such an amazing pace.  No longer are mp3 players restricted to just music and that means you can listen to a book while walking or jogging, while commuting to and from work, while cleaning house, while doing laundry, while…well, you get the idea.

Another reason for the growing popularity of audio book downloads is the fact that they are considerably less expensive than audio books on CD.  In fact statistics have shown that they are about 35% cheaper than  books on CDs.

One more perk of mp3 audio books is the fact that there are now companies that allow you to rent books and audio books as opposed to buying them.  This means you can rent the audio book on CD and then import it to your mp3 player if you so choose and listen to it when and where you want.  This is great for those people who read a book once and then put it on a shelf where it remains until you move or have a garage sale.  It's true that many books are read more than once but if you know a book is going to be a one time read, then renting is a good option.  If you’re interested in renting books and audio books try visiting Booksfree.com.

Another area where mp3 audio books are making an impact is in the textbook industry!  That’s right; there are companies that provide audio textbooks and digital textbooks(etextbooks) at a nice discount.  In fact the downloadable etextbooks are said to be half the price of the printed versions. You even have the ability to get just the chapters you need on most books.  If you’re interested in audio or digital textbooks check out iChapters.com.

One more thing, if you don’t have an mp3 player don’t rush out and buy the most expensive one you can find.  You see since downloadable audio books don’t use as much memory as a comparable length music file does you don’t have to have the largest, most expensive mp3 player on the market.  Just find a reasonably priced player and then download an audio book or two and start enjoying.  The only thing you might do before you buy an mp3 player is make sure it’s compatible with the downloadable audio books that you’re going to be using and the odds are it will be.
